Am Abend
Language: German (Deutsch)
Hoch oben an den Flühen
Still ward's im Tannenwald;
Die Felsen rings verglühen,
Und jeder Klang verhallt.
Der Bach nur leise, leise
Singt in dem tiefsten Grund
Noch eine Schlummerweise
Den Weiden in der Rund.
Und ihrem Neste fliegen
Die letzten Vögel zu:
Könntst du auch, Herz, dich wiegen
Wie sie zur Ruh, zur Ruh!

At eventide
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
On high along the rock faces,
It grew quiet in the fir forest;
The glowing of crags round about grows fainter,
And every sound echoes away.
Quietly, quietly, only the brook
In the deepest depths
Still sings a slumber song
To the willows round about.
And the last birds fly
Towards their nests:
If you, too, my heart, like them,
Could rock yourself to rest, to rest!
