by Anacreon (c582BCE - c485BCE)
Translation by Eduard Mörike (1804 - 1875)

Seliger Rausch
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Greek (Ελληνικά)
Wenn Bakchos erst mich heimsucht,
Dann schlummern meine Sorgen,
Reich bin ich dann, wie Krösos,
Und singe süße Weisen.

Bekränzt mit Efeu lieg ich,
Im Über mute tret ich
Verachtend alles nieder.
- Schenk ein! es gilt zu trinken!

          *      *     *

Reich mir den Becher, Knabe!
Viel besser ist es trunken,
Als tot am Boden liegen.
