  Erblaßt sind rings die Höhn.
Da glühn sie jäh und blicken noch ein Mal
So schön, so schön
Hinab in's tiefe Thal.
  Doch war's der letzte Strahl,
Und bald mit Macht
Legt sich auf Thal und Höhn die finstre Nacht.

  Und nimmer wird es licht,
Eh neues Frühroth wieder lacht von fern.
Doch mild durchbricht
Das Dunkel Stern an Stern:
  O! freudig auf den Herrn
Harr' auch im Tod,
Bis hell dir strahlt das ewge Morgenroth!

Evening glow

  The heights round about have grown pale.
Suddenly they glow and once more they gaze
So beautifully, so beautifully
Down into the deep valley.
  But it was last beam of light,
And soon the dark night
Descends powerfully upon valley and heights.

  And it shall not grow light
Until a new red dawn smiles again from afar.
But gently through the dark
Breaks star upon star:
  Oh, abide joyfully in the Lord,
Abide even in death,
Until the eternal dawning shines for you!
