Rudolph Baumbach (1840 - 1905)
Vorbei, vorbei
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Ich habe geträumt bis Morgens fruh
Den schönsten Traum; mein Traum warst du.
Ich durfte im Traum dein Stirnlein küssen;
Am Morgen habe ich weinen müssen.
Ich habe geklopft des Morgens fruh
An deine Thüre; sie blieb nicht zu.
Du bist nicht besser als alle andern.
Vorbei, vorbei! Muss wieder wandern.
Note for the first line of both stanzas: Baumbach omitted the Umlaut on "früh" for the sake of the rhyme.
Confirmed with Rudolf Baumbach, Spielmannslieder, Leipzig: Verlag von A. G. Liebeskind, 1883, page 45.

'Tis past, 'tis past
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I dreamt until the early morn
The most beautiful dream; you were my dream.
In my dream I was permitted to kiss your brow;
In the morning I had to weep.
Early in the morning I knocked
Upon your door; it did not remain shut.
You are no better than the others.
'Tis past, 'tis past! I must go wandering again.
