En Fillehytte var dit Bo,
dit Udstyr var kun ringe
ej Får, ej Svin, ej Hest, ej Ko,
du magted med at bringe;
du boed højt på Fjeldets Rund,
du stod kun lavt, så sagde hun,
din stoute Rivalinde.
Du bar fra Fjeldet ned til ham
din Kjærlighed og så den Skam;
som Godtfolk kunde finde.

En fuglerede var dit Bo,
din Medgift der du lagde:
det var ej Kalv, det var ej Ko,
men efter hvad man sagde
det var en Jenteunge rund,
en dejlig Glut så frisk og sund,
som Nogen kunde finde,
hun kom med Sol, hun kom ved ham,
hun kom fra Gud, er det en Skam,
for nogen jordfødt Kvinde.

Velsignet du, som gik til ham
og gav ham, hvad du ejed;
som Bygdehån og Jenteskam
på Hjertets Vægtskål vejed
og fandt, at Skålen vipped op
imod den Hytte, på hvis Top
den gule Græstørv luer;
Velsignet du, hvis Smil er bredt,
hvis Sjæl er ren og Hjertet hedt
mer end hos mange Fruer.

Ta demeure était une cabane d'alpage,
et ton bien était bien pauvre ;
tu ne pouvais apporter
ni mouton, ni porc, ni cheval, ni vache,
Tu vivais là-haut, sur le flanc de la montagne ;
tu n'étais pas bien haut placée,
disait ta fière rivale.
Tu lui as apporté de la montagne
ton amour et toute la honte
que les gens de bien pouvaient trouver.

Ton logis était pareil à un nid d'oiseau,
et c'est là que se trouvait ton cadeau de mariage.
Ce n'était ni un veau, ni une vache,
mais, à ce que l'on racontait,
c'était une petite fille bien ronde,
une charmante fillette, fraîche et robuste
comme on en trouve rarement.
Elle vint avec le soleil, elle vint de lui ;
elle venait de Dieu : est-ce donc une honte
pour une femme née sur cette terre ?

Bénie sois-tu, toi qui allas vers lui
et lui donnas tout ce que tu possédais ;
qui, malgré les railleries du village et la honte d’être une jeune fille,
as pesé le pour et le contre dans la balance de ton cœur
et as constaté que le plateau penchait
du côté de cette cabane dont le toit
flamboie de gazon doré.
Bénie sois-tu, toi dont le sourire est large.
dont l'âme est pure et le cœur ardent,
plus que chez bien des dames.
