by Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852)
Translation by Fanny (Franziska) von Hoffnaaß, née Jägerhuber (1831 - 1892)

Vor deinem lieben Angesicht
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Vor deinem lieben Angesicht
wandt' ich mich weg und schaute hin,
wo leicht und hehr das Sternenlicht
in stummer Pracht herniederschien.
Seid doch zu ferne,
ihr stolzen Sterne,
um zu erwärmen meine Brust;
du scheinst so kalt nicht,
mein holdes Mondlicht,
strahlst uns'rer Welt zu süßer Lust.
Mary, mein Lieb, bist du nur mein,
was ist am Glanz der Welt gelegen?
Dein Blick, so mild wie Mondenschein,
ist meiner Heimat schönster Segen!
