— «Perchè ti culli, o bosco, senza pioggia, senza vento, piegando a terra le vette?» — «Perchè non mi cullerei, se il mio buon tempo passa? S’accorciano i giorni, le notti s’allungano, e il fogliame mi si dirada; batte il vento le mie foglie in pieno, ed i cantori mi mette in fuga; batte il vento di sghimbescio, l’inverno è giunto, l’estate è lontana. Perchè dunque non crollerei il capo, se gli uccelli se ne vanno? Sulle cime dei rami più alti le rondinelle passano a stuoli, il mio cuore e la mia felicità portandosi con loro. Se ne vanno a schiera a schiera oscurando l’orizzonte; se ne van, come gl’istanti, scotendo l’ali, e mi lascian derelitto, appassito e indolenzito, solo col mio rimpianto, a cullarmi con esso!
