    Zu singen heb' ich an. 
    Liebliche Maienblume, 
    Du hast mir's angethan. 
Nach edlen Blüthen darf ich schau'n 
Auch über fremden Gartenzaun 
    Und mich daran erbau'n.

    Es ist aus Gold gesponnen 
    Dein seidenweiches, Haar, 
    Deine Augen sind zwei Bronnen, 
    Lauter, tief und klar. 
Wie Nelkenblüthe ist dein Mund. 
Ach, dass ich ihn doch küssen kunnt! 
    Ich würde ganz gesund.

    Durchwandert hab ich die Weite 
    Vom Nordmeer bis zum Po, 
    Fand aber keine Zweite, 
    So lieb und maienfroh. 
Ich sah der Kaiserin Gesicht, 
So schön wie dein's ist's lange nicht --
    Ein Schelm wer's weiter spricht!

    I begin to sing it.
    Lovely flower of May,
    You have made me fall for you.
I may look at noble blossoms
Over the garden fences of strangers
    And be uplifted by them.

    Spun from gold
    Is your silk-soft hair,
    Your eyes are two wells,
    Pure, deep, and clear.
Your lips are like a carnation blossom.
Ah, if I could only kiss them!
    I would be utterly healed.

    I have wandered through the expanse
    From the North Sea to the Po,
    But I found no other woman
    So dear and May-joyful.
I saw the face of the empress,
It was not nearly as beautiful as yours --
    Whoever continues to say so is a knave!
