Mai
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
In der Birke droben singt es,
Unten an der Mauer klingt es,
Hier der Bursche, dort der Star,
Jeder bringt sein Ständchen dar.
Girrend, wie's in tausend Zungen
Schon von Alters her erklungen:
"Komm, o komm, geliebte Maid,
Unser Nestchen ist bereit!"
Mutter Sonne lauscht der Weise,
Lauscht vergnügt und lächelt leise:
"Alte süße Narrerei! --
Ja, man merkt's: es wurde Mai!"

May
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Up in the birch tree there is singing,
Down below by the stone wall there is ringing,
Here the lad, there the starling,
Each is presenting his serenade.
Cooing, as in a thousand tongues
It has already resounded since antiquity:
"Come, oh come, beloved maiden,
Our nest is prepared!"
Mother Sun listens to the lay,
Listens contentedly and smiles quietly:
"Old sweet foolishness! --
Yes, one can tell: May has come!”
