Dalmålaren
Language: Swedish (Svenska)
Jag målade Elia,
som far till himmelrik,
jag målade Maria
så hvit och dufvolik.
O, kunde nu jag måla
min egen mörka själ,
att klar den måtte stråla
inför Guds son och Mikael!

Jag målat bönders väggar
och kullors kistelock,
all vårens blom och häggar,
all Edens lustgård ock.
O, vore snart jag vorden
ett blomst till Herrans pris:
en kludd och strunt på jorden,
ett liljeträd i paradis!

Confirmed with Sveriges National-Litteratur, 1500-1900. XXIII: Per Hallström. Erik Axel Karlfeldt, Stockholm, Albert Bonniers Förlag, 1907, pages 284-285.
