Kein Lämpchen scheint durch's Fenster...

Kein Lämpchen scheint durch's Fenster mehr,
Wo meine Holde ruht.
Ich aber irre noch umher
In liebekrankem Muth.
Die Sternlein gehn in heller Schaar
Aus düstrer Nacht herfür;
Und nehmen meiner Liebe wahr,
Und tragen Leid mit mir.
Vielleicht, ihr Sternlein, nenn' ich bald
Den holden Engel mein;
Denn könnte liebeleer und kalt
Des Engels Seele seyn?
Ihr Herz ist fromm, und fromm mein Herz,
Und täglich bitt' ich Gott:
Ach lindre meinen bangen Schmerz!
Sonst sende mir den Tod!

No little lamp shines through the window...
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Chosen for Diff
No little lamp shines through the window any longer
Where my lovely one rests.
I, however, still stray about
With a lovelorn spirit.
In a bright throng, the stars emerge
From out of the gloomy night;
And perceive my love
And share my sorrow with me.
Perhaps, ye little stars, I shall soon
Call the lovely angel mine;
For could the soul of an angel
Be loveless and cold?
Her heart is devout, and my heart is devout,
And daily I ask God:
Ah, assuage my anxious pain!
Otherwise send me death!
