by Laurence Alma-Tadema (1865 - 1940)

A winter night
Language: English
Hark! Hark! The winter wind doth wail,
And the winter night is drear:
Tho' the Moon shines silver-pale
And the twinkling stars are clear,
There has risen a veil, a misty veil
Which doth hide their light from here.

And my Love, who is my light,
Only shines for other eyes:
Fate to hide her from my sight,
Like a cloud does ever rise
Till my heart's more black than night,
Drearier than the lightless skies.

Hark! how the winter wind doth wail doth wail.
