An Kunst und Glanz sind [diese]1 Lieder arm,
Schmucklos sind sie im Blumental erklungen,
Doch war das Herz, das sie geboren, warm,
Und stets von Herzen habe ich gesungen.

Nicht Weisheit lehrte mich den frohen Sang,
In eigner Brust ist jedes Lied geboren,
Und wenn's im Frühlingstale laut erklang,
War's mit dem Wind im Abendrot verloren.

Wenn du's verstehst, was ich in Lust und Scherz,
Was ich im Weh als Heiligstes empfunden,

Aquestes cançons són pobres en art i esplendor,
sense ornaments, sonaven a la vall de les flors,
però el cor que les va engendrar era fervent,
i jo sempre he cantat des del cor.

No fou la saviesa qui em va ensenyar a cantar tan alegrement;
cada cançó va néixer dins del meu propi cor,
i quan ressonava fort a la vall de primavera,
es perdia amb el vent en la vermellor del capvespre.

Si pots entendre el que en la joia i la plagasitat,
el que en el dolor he sentit com sagrat,
si reconeixes el meu cor jove en aquesta cançó,
llavors he trobat la recompensa que desitjava.
