Marschlied
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Lustig ist's, wenn Fahnen fliegen,
Und dazu die Trommel schallt;
Wie das rauschet, wie das flattert,
Wie das klingt, und wie das hallt!
Rüstig wandert sich's mit Vielen
Bei der Trommel raschem Schlag,
Lust'ger schallt das Lied im Chore,
Feuriger, durch Busch und Hag.
Wo Soldatenlieder klingen,
Ist gar schnell der Frohsinn wach,
Und die lust'gen Weisen schallen
Lang noch den Entschwund'nen nach.
Wo ein munt'res Dirnchen, streckt es
Seinen Kopf zum Zaun heraus,
Und von Alten und von Jungen
Drängt sich's vor aus jedem Haus.
Alles will die Schmucken schauen,
Die vorüberzieh'n am Ried,
Greis und Kind will sich erlaben
An der Soldateska Lied.
Blicke fliegen hin und wieder
Höher manch' ein Busen wallt,
Doch voraus die Fahne flattert,
Und die Trommel klingt und schallt.
Unter Klingen, unter Singen
Geht es fort mit rüst'gem Schritt,
Freuen euch Soldatenlieder,
Nun so kommt -- und singet mit!
Confirmed with Johann Nepomuk Vogl, Soldaten-Lieder mit Bildern und Singweisen, Wien: Verlag von Carl Gerold, 1849, pages 3-6. Note: Randhartinger's autograph only shows stanzas 1,5-7 but the song is strophic so all the stanzas could be sung.

Marching song
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
It is jolly when the flags fly,
And the drum sounds to the flying;
How it rustles, how it flutters,
How it clangs, and how it resounds!
One walks vigorously when one walks with many others
To the rapid beat of the drum,
A song sounds merrier in a chorus,
Fierier through bush and hedge.
Where the songs of soldiers ring out,
Exhilaration quickly awakens,
And for a long time the merry lays
Echo after the soldiers have passed by.
Wherever there be a blithesome maiden,
She pokes her head over the fence,
And old and young
Throng forth from every house.
Everyone wishes to see the smart men
Who pass by along the reedy marsh,
Old man and child wish to delight
In the song of the soldiers.
Glances fly back and forth,
Many a breast beats higher,
But the flag flutters on ahead,
And the drum beats and resounds.
With clanging, with singing
We go on with vigorous steps;
If you enjoy soldiers' songs,
Well, then come -- and sing along!
