Det strideste Vand, jeg i Verden saa,
Gud trøste mig i min Kvide 
det strømmer dybt under Klipper graa,
hvorfra det kommer, hvorhen det maa,
kun de, der voldte det, vide.

Ret aldrig bar det en Blomst paa Rand,
og aldrig Skib over Voven.
Og aldrig fløj der en Fugl fra Strand,
og aldrig spejled det sorte Vand
en Himlens Stjærne derover.

Det Vand, det vælder fra Øjets Glar,
Gud hjælpe mig i min Vaade hos dem,
der Dagen i Sønder skar,
hos dem, der Lykken af Gaarde bar,
og kunde det aldrig raade.
