Die Tänzerin
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Tief in Tränen zugebracht.
Seit er mich verlassen hat,
Irr ich so von Stadt zu Stadt,
Und das [goldene]3 Sonnenlicht
Leuchtet auf ein blaß Gesicht.
Aber [abends]4 um diese Zeit
Trage ich mein lila Kleid,
Lach ich im erhellten Haus
Alle die Mannerblicke aus.
[Schwenk ich wie keine mein schönes Bein
In den Menschenraum hinein,
Glühen meine Lippen rot,
Tanz ich über Leben und Tod.]5

The dancer
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Every evening around this time
I put on a purple dress,
Yellow stockings, purple shoes,
Ah, only my mirror watches the while.
My cheeks and lips I colour red,
And now I shall dance as if it were a matter of life and death.
When then the curtain falls to the sound of cheering,
I am the queen of the world.
But in the morning around this time
I put on a grey dress,
And I have often then spent
The night deep in tears.
Since he left me
I stray about thus from city to city,
And the golden sunlight
Shines upon a pale face.
But in the evening around this time
I wear my purple dress,
In the brightly-lit house
I laugh at all the gazes of men.
Like no other I swing my lovely legs
Out into the room full of people,
My lips glow redly,
I dance above life and death.
