Schweigend geht die junge Frau
An dem Arm des greisen Gatten,
Ein getreuer, stummer Schatten,
Durch die sommergrüne Au.

Sehnend irrt ihr weher Blick
Über Felder, Busch und Wiesen,
Wo die bunten Blumen sprießen,
Scheu zum Gatten dann zurück.

Doch der Alte, morsch und müd,
Blöde starrt er in die Weite,
Ohne Ahnung, daß zur Seite
Ewig ihm die Sehnsucht blüht.

Una parella

La jove dona camina en silenci
de bracet amb el seu vell marit,
una ombra fidel i muda
a través de la verda prada d’estiu.

Anhelant, el seu trist esguard erra
pels camps, els matossars i les prades
on brosten flors de tots colors,
i després retorna vers el seu espòs.

Però el vell, fràgil i cansat,
bajoc, mira fixament vers la llunyania,
sense adonar-se que al seu costat
li floreix eternament la nostàlgia.
