Waldabendgang
Language: German (Deutsch)
Sag, bist jemals du gegangen
Abends in den Wald,
Ohne daß der Seele Bangen
Er geheilt dir bald? --
Wenn der Rasen goldgrün leuchtet
In dem milden Schein:
Was das Auge dir gefeuchtet,
Muß vergessen sein.
Wenn im Grunde stehn die Fohren,
Als wie glühend Erz:
In das Himmelreich verloren
Hat sich bald dein Herz.
Mit der Vögel Abendliede
Mischt sich froh dein Preis;
Welch ein tiefer, tiefer Friede
Füllt die Seele leis!
Mit den Blumendüften steiget
Auf dein still Gebet;
Vor dem Herrn stehst du geneiget,
Der vorübergeht.--
Sag, bist jemals du gegangen
Abends in den Wald,
Ohne daß sein himmlisch Prangen
Dich geheilet bald?

Evening walk in the woods
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Tell me, did you ever walk
Into the woods of an evening,
Without finding that they soon healed
The anxiety of your soul? --
When the lawn shines green-gold
In the gentle radiance:
That which brought tears to your eyes
Must be forgotten.
When the pines stand in the lowlands
Like glowing bronze:
Your heart soon loses itself
In the realm of Heaven.
Your praise joyfully mingles
With the evening song of the birds;
What a deep, deep peace
Quietly fills your soul!
Your silent prayer rises up
With the scents of the flowers;
You stand bowed before
The Lord who passes.--
Tell me, did you ever walk
Into the woods of an evening,
Without their heavenly splendour
Having soon healed you?
