Sie saß in unserm Mädchenkreise,
Ein Stern am Frauen-Firmament;
Sie sprach in unsres Volkes Weise,
Nur leis, mit klagendem Akzent.
Du hörtest niemals heimverlangen
Den stolzen Mund der schönen Frau;
Nur auf den südlich blassen Wangen
Und über der gewölbten Brau'
Lag noch Granadas Mondenschimmer,
Den sie vertauscht um unsern Strand;
Und ihre Augen dachten immer
An ihr beglänztes Heimatland.

Elle était assise dans notre cercle de filles,
Une étoile au firmament des femmes ;
Elle parlait à notre manière populaire,
Juste doucement, avec un accent plaintif.
On n'entendait jamais la fière bouche
De la belle femme exprimer le mal du pays ;
Seulement sur ses joues pâles du sud
Et au-dessus des sourcils arqués,
S'attardait le reflet de la lune de Grenade
Qu'elle échangea pour notre plage ;
Et ses yeux pensent toujours
À son pays resplendissant.
