Я не знаю, что такое осока, Тихий берег и плакучая ива. Я живу под самой крышей, высоко; Жизнь моя молчалива. Ни полей, ни лесов я не видел, А говорят, они есть в самом деле... Мне кажется, меня кто-то обидел... Это было... на прошлой неделе. На прошлой неделе сказал мне кто-то, Что я слеп, что я не знаю природы, Что меня задушила работа И что дети мои такие уроды... Но это неверно! Ну, правда же, неверно... Мои дети хороши, хотя бедны. Я беден, и едят они скверно, Оттого личики их бесцветны и бледны. Я много вижу через маленькое оконце, И душа моя совсем не ослепла. О, я вижу, как подымается солнце Сквозь тучи дыма и мелкого пепла. Вижу, как оно золотит трубы, Как оно смеется невнятно, И прикладываю страстно синие губы К стене, где играют солнечные пятна. А сегодня у меня день наслажденья, Даже забыл, что обижен недавно. Цегодня я заметил весны пробужденье, И сделалось мне так хорошо, так славно... День воскресный, на улицах тише, Меньше дыму, солнце ярче, чем в буден. Я смотрю на белые крыши, Простор их всегда безлюден. Думаю, поля зимою такие точно. В голове роятся тихие мысли... Вижу под крышей, у трубы водосточной, Сосульки ледяные повисли. Желтая стена полна была света. Мороз, но и лучи ярки и быстры. Одна сосулька, солнцем согрета, Стала таять и бросала искры. Искры сияли, переливались тонко. И вдруг, огнями новыми играя, Сорвалася сосулька радостно, Звонко разбилась о камни внизу у сарая. И весёл я, и смеяться хочу я! Разве не весны пробужденье я видел? Кто сказал, что я живу, природы не чуя, Тот меня напрасно обидел. Нет, мне знакома улыбка природы! Ничего, что мы в городе и что бедны... А дети мои совсем не уроды, Только слабы и бледны.
