Südliches Glockenspiel
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG

Confirmed with Karl Stamm, Dichtungen: Gesamtausgabe, erster Band, Zürich: Rascher & Cie., 1920, page 118. Appears in Wanderung und Lied.

Southern carillon
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
From the bronze bell a note brightly escapes
and sounds and resounds before falling abruptly silent.
Hark! Now a second, releasing itself, is singing.
All keen to outdo the sisterly note,
a third soars loudly into the sky.
Before long these notes must bow mutely
before that darker one forcing them down.
Now even that note dies. There hangs a pregnant silence.
In vain you await a break in the hush:
The peal's sadness casts a spell on your visage.
