Horch! Stimmen und Geschrei, doch kaum zu hören; Dumpf und verworren tönt es, wie von ferne, Und ich erkenne, die allnächtlich stören Der Toten Schlaf, den stillen Gang der Sterne. Der trunkne Küster, aus der Schenke kommen, Setzt sich noch in den Mondschein vor dem Hause, Kräht einen Psalm; doch kaum hat sie's vernommen, So stürzt sein Weib hervor, daß sie ihn zause, Heißt ihn hineingehn und beschilt ihn grimmig, Hell kräht und unverdrossen der Geselle; So mischen sich geübt und doppelstimmig Ihr Katzmiaulen und sein Mondsgebelle. Sie muß ganz nah sein, da ich es kann hören, Die überkommne alte Pfründerhöhle; Laß sehn, ob das Gesindel ist zu stören: Schrei, was du kannst, o du vergrabne Seele! Die Tür schlägt zu - der Lärm hat sich verloren, Es hülfe nichts, wenn ich zu Tod mich riefe! Sie stopfen furchtsam ihre breiten Ohren Vor jedem Ruf des Lebens aus der Tiefe.

Écoute ! des voix et des cris, pourtant à peine audibles ; Cela sonne sourd et embrouillé, comme venant de loin, Et je reconnais ce qui perturbe toutes les nuits Le sommeil des morts, le silencieux cours des étoiles. Le sacristain ivre qui arrive du cabaret, S'assoit au clair de lune devant sa maison, Braille un psaume ; mais à peine l'a-t-elle entendu Que sa femme se précipite dehors et le prend par le bras, Lui signifie de rentrer et le houspille furieusement, Le gaillard infatigable chante d'une voix stridente ; Ainsi se mêlaient doublement assortis et exercés Ses miaulements de chats et ses aboiements à la lune. Elle doit être tout près, car je peux l'entendre Envahir mon vieux trou de tout repos ; Voyons si l'on peut déranger la vermine : Crie autant que tu peux, ô âme ensevelie ! La porte se ferme, - le vacarme a disparu, Cela n'aurait servi à rien que je crie à en mourir ! De peur ils ont bouché leurs grandes oreilles À ce cri de la vie venant des profondeurs.
