Douleur précoce

Il faut plaindre tous ceux qui n'ont pas eu de mère, 
Car leur espoir est triste et leur joie est amère. 
Même quand une main d'ami s'ouvre pour eux, 
Ils tremblent: on dirait qu'ils ont peur d'etre heureux; 
Et leur âme, avant l'age à l'effort asservie, 
N'est pas apprivoisée aux douceurs de la vie. 

Tel, un oiseau, surpris vivant par l'oiseleur, 
Palpite, le coeur gros de crainte et de douleur, 
Dans la main d'un enfant qui doucement le presse, 
Et le pauvret se meurt d'effroi sous la caresse.
