Ihr Kinder der Melancholie!

Ihr danket Flammen euer Sein,
Ich geb' euch nun den Flammen wieder,
Und all' die schwärmerischen Lieder,
Denn ach! er sang nicht mir allein.

Ihr brennet nun, und bald, ihr Lieben,
Ist keine Spur von euch mehr hier.
Doch ach! der Mann, der euch geschrieben, 
Brennt lange noch vielleicht in mir.

Om brand te stichten, ga te gronde,
O kind'ren der melancholie!
 
Je dankt aan vlammen je bestaan,
De vlammen mogen je weer vangen,
En al die dweperige zangen,
Want ach! zijn zang sprak meerd'ren aan.
 
Je brandt nu al, en straks, mijn vrienden,
Is niets van jullie nog te zien.
Maar ach! de man die jullie dienden
Brandt lang nog wel in mij misschien.
