Es war ein heitres goldnes Jahr, Nun rauscht das Laub im Sande, Und als es noch im Knospen war, Da ging sie noch im Lande. Besehen hat sie Berg und Tal Und uns'rer Ströme Wallen; Es hat im jungen Sonnenstrahl Ihr Alles wohlgefallen. Ich weiß in meinem Vaterland Noch manchen Berg, o Liebe, Noch manches Tal, das Hand in Hand Uns zu durchwandern bliebe. Noch manches schöne Tal kenn' ich Voll dunkelgrüner Eichen; - O fernes Herz, besinne dich Und gib ein leises Zeichen! Da eilte sie voll Freundlichkeit, Die Heimat zu erlangen - Doch irrend ist sie all zu weit Und aus der Welt gegangen.
