 Es war ein heitres goldnes Jahr,
Nun rauscht das Laub im Sande,
Und als es noch im Knospen war,
Da ging sie noch im Lande.

Besehen hat sie Berg und Tal
Und uns'rer Ströme Wallen;
Es hat im jungen Sonnenstrahl
Ihr Alles wohlgefallen.

Ich weiß in meinem Vaterland
Noch manchen Berg, o Liebe,
Noch manches Tal, das Hand in Hand
Uns zu durchwandern bliebe.

Noch manches schöne Tal kenn' ich
Voll dunkelgrüner Eichen; -
O fernes Herz, besinne dich
Und gib ein leises Zeichen!

Da eilte sie voll Freundlichkeit,
Die Heimat zu erlangen -
Doch irrend ist sie all zu weit
Und aus der Welt gegangen.

C'était une sereine année d'or,
Aujourd'hui les feuilles bruissent sur le sable,
Quand tout était encore en bouton,
Elle s'était promenée dans le pays.

Elle a visité monts et vallées,
Et les berges de nos fleuves ;
Dans la jeune lumière du soleil,
Tout l'avait satisfaite.

Je connais dans mon pays
Encore bien des monts, ô mon amour,
Encore bien des vallons, que main dans la main
Il nous reste à parcourir.

Je connais encore maintes belles vallées,
Emplies de chênes verts foncés ;
Ô cœur lointain, souviens-toi,
Et donne un signe discret !

Avec gentillesse, elle se pressait alors
De s'approprier le pays --
Mais elle a erré bien trop loin
Et elle est sortie du monde.
