Aufgestanden war ich, Mutter,
Früh am Sankt Johannismorgen,
Sah ein Mädchen einsam stehen
Unten an dem Meeresstrand.

Ganz allein wusch sie und trocken
Wand allein sie ihre Linnen,
Hing sie auf am Rosenstrauche,
Und indem die Tücher trocknen,
Hob die Kleine an ihr Lied:

"Wo weilt meine Liebe, wo?
Und wohin, ihn suchen, geh' ich?"

Auf und ab am weiten Meere
Ging die Kleine lieblich singend,
Gold'nen Kamm in ihren Händen,
Für das gold'ne, weiche Haar.

"Schiffer, kommest aus der Ferne,
Sage mir -- und schiffe glücklich! --
Sahest du nicht meine Liebe,
Sahst du nicht ihn wandeln dort?"
