On the morning of the Feast of St. John,
I saw a maiden standing solitary
Down by the seashore.
All alone she washed and
Alone she wrung out her linens,
Hung them upon a rosebush,
And while the clothes were drying
The little one began her song:
"Where dwells my love, where?
And whither, to seek him, shall I go?"
Up and down along the broad sea
The little one walked, charmingly singing,
A golden comb in her hands
For her soft, golden hair.
"Sailor, if you come from far away,
Tell me -- and sail with good fortune! --
Did you not see my love,
Did you not see him walking there?"
