Our translations:  ENG
Auf des Brunnens Säule sass die Taube,
Sass das [Turteltäubchen]1, zärtlich girrend.
"Fliege weiter, [Täubchen, flügelschwirrend,]2
Birg dich vor [des Mittags Gluth]3 im Laube,
Vor der Sonnengluth und vor dem Staube!"

Blieb das Täubchen auf der Säule sitzen,
Und der stolze Liebste lockt' es kirrend.
Warf das Täubchen in die Brust sich girrend,
Pickte vom Gezweig aus Brunnenritzen
Oelbaumblättchen grau im Sonnenblitzen.

Warf das Friedensblatt zu seinen Füssen,
In den Quell, der ihm die Glieder kühlte,
Ins Gewässer, das um Marmor spülte,
Girrte, ihm entschwebend, [Liebesgrüssen]4:
'Eh' du betest, Herr, vergieb der Süssen!'
