Ein Schwärmer stieg's in die entzückte Luft,
Versprühte buntes Licht; nun ist's verpufft!
Johanniskäfer war's und glühte schön;
Nun ist's ein Würmchen, häßlich anzusehn.
Wie Nachtigall sang's Liebe immerzu;
Ein Käuzchen ward es nun and ruft schuhu.

Ah, Dieu, un chant funèbre s'accorde à mon cœur,
Car maintenant il doit prendre congé de la terre.
Il a conjuré la méchante mascarade
Et pris le voile et le chapelet.
Il entre au cloître, endosse le froc,
Il deviendra un saint que l'on pourra prier.
Naguère il dansait comme une petite étoile dans le ciel ;
Ici-bas, il est tombé et s'est éteint dans la rosée.
Rêveur il s'élevait dans l'air enchanté,
Pulvérisait une lumière multicolore, maintenant il est évanoui !
C'était un ver luisant, et il brillait joliment ;
Maintenant c'est un vermisseau, hideux à voir.
Comme un rossignol, il chantait sans cesse l'amour ;
Il est devenu maintenant un chat huant et crie houhou.
