Aus einem Chor des Sophokles

Nicht gezeugt sein, wäre das beste Schicksal, 
Oder doch früh sterben in zarter Kindheit: 
Wächst zum Jüngling einer empor, verfolgt ihn 
Üppige Torheit, 

Während Mißgunst, Streit und Gefahr und Haß ihm 
Quälend nahn; reift vollends hinan zum Greis er, 
Jede Schmach muß dulden er dann, vereinzelt 
Stehend und kraftlos. 

Stets umdroht uns Flutengedräng und schleudert 
Hart an steilabfallenden Klippenstrand uns, 
Mag der Süd nun peitschen die Woge, mag sie 
Schwellen der Nordsturm.
