Entre deux rocs d'un noir d'ébène Voyez-vous ce sombre hallier Qui se hérisse dans la plaine Ainsi qu'une touffe de laine Entre les cornes du bélier ? Là, dans une ombre non frayée, Grondent, le tigre ensanglanté, La lionne, mère effrayée, Le chacal, l'hyène rayée, Et le léopard tacheté. Là, des monstres de toute forme Rampent : - le basilic rêvant, L'hippopotame au ventre énorme, Et le boa, vaste et difforme, Qui semble un tronc d'arbre vivant. L'orfraie aux paupières vermeilles, Le serpent, le singe méchant, Sifflent comme un essaim d'abeilles ; L'éléphant aux larges oreilles Casse les bambous en marchant. Là, vit la sauvage famille Qui glapit, bourdonne et mugit. Le bois entier hurle et fourmille. Sous chaque buisson un oeil brille, Dans chaque antre une voix rugit. Eh bien ! seul et nu sur la mousse, Dans ce bois-là je serais mieux Que devant Nourmahal-la-Rousse, Qui parle avec une voix douce Et regarde avec de doux yeux.
