Glaubet nicht es wären Tränen,
was die Wange mir genäßt,
nein des Herzens heißes Sehnen
hat mir Blut in's Aug' gepreßt!

Tränen bringen milde Kunde,
werden oft zur stillen Lust,
doch aus meiner tiefen Wunde
strömt kein Trost mir in die Brust!

Without comfort

Do not believe that it was tears
That had wetted my cheeks,
No, the fervent yearning of my heart
Has caused my eyes to be filled with blood.

Tears carry a gentle message,
They often become a quiet joy,
Yet from my deep wound
No comfort streams into my breast.
