by Iacob Negruzzi (1842 - 1932)
Translation by Elisabeth Pauline Ottilie Luise zu Wied, Prinzessin (1843 - 1916), as Carmen Sylva

Serenadă
Language: Romanian (Română)
Neguri dese, tenebroase
  Trec peste pămênt,
Noapte mai intunecoasă
  Zace pe-al meu gând.

Lună tu, cu blânde raze!
  Lună ce aştept,
Vin, ah! vino, luminează
  Noaptea mea din pept.

N'auzi vocea-mi cum şopteşte
  Plângeri de amor,
O! te-arată, fericeşte
  Pe-un biet cântător,

Vocea mea tânguitoare
  La vederea ta
Intr'un cânt de desfătare
  Dulce s'ar schimba.

Lună tu, cu blânde raze,
  Lună ce aştept,
Vin, ah! vino, luminează
  Noaptea mea din pept!

Serenade
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Romanian (Română)
[Dichter düst'rer Nebel gleitet]1
Auf der Erden hin;
Dunkler liegt die Nacht gebreitet
Über meinem Sinn.

Mond mit sanften Strahlenwellen,
Komm, ach! komm! Du mußt
Ja die tiefe Nacht erhellen
Hier in meiner Brust.

Höre mich, im Liebesharme
Klagen, flüstern dir!
Zeige dich! Es harrt der arme
Sänger deiner hier.

Meiner Stimme traurig' Klingen -
Hörst du nur mich an -
Löst in süßes Freudensingen
Sich, in Wohllaut dann.

Mond mit sanften Strahlenwellen,
Komm, ach komm! Du mußt
Ja die tiefe Nacht erhellen
Hier in meiner Brust.
