Laß mich, das Haupt an Deine Brust gelehnt,
Verstohlen lauschen auf des Herzens Schlagen,
Ob es das Wort, das ich so heiß ersehnt,
So lang gehofft, mir endlich wolle sagen.

Ob ich gefleht, ob stürmisch auch ich frug,
Es wollt' es nimmer mir Dein Mund vertrauen,
Er fürchtet Deine Augen, die so klug,
Und die so wachsam auf die Lippen schauen.

D'rum mag Dein Herz, von meinem Haupt versteckt,
Daß es mich liebt, ganz leise mir gestehen;
Was zittert es? was zagt es noch erschreckt?
Die klugen Augen können's ja nicht sehen.
