Am Silberwolkenrand ruhte der Abendstern aus dämmerigem Haine fragte ihn die Dirn: Sag, Abendstern, was man im Himmel denkt, wenn man den ersten Kuss dem Liebsten schenkt. Der scheuen Himmelstochter Antwort ward gehört: des Lichtes Engelschar schaut nieder auf die Erd’ sieht, dass die eigene Glückseligkeit dort widerscheint; und nur der Tod wendet die Augen ab und weint.

Unter des Himmels purpurnem Brand liegen stille Meer und Land in der Morgenstund. Verschneiter Ast, bereifter Zweig zeichnen ab sich siegesreich gegen roten Hintergrund. Zum Ritter, der am Fenster steht, Schlachtenlärm herüber weht; auf und ab er schreitet. Doch eine kleine, schneeweiße Hand - sanft kühlt sie seiner Stirne Brand - ihn zart zum Bleiben verleitet. Der Ritter führt sein Horn zum Mund bläst wild hinaus in die Morgenstund über das Land, das schweigt. Hell klingt’s hinaus und spröde; und es erlischt der Brand der Morgenröte allmählich, als die Sonne steigt.

Var det en dröm, att ljuvt en gång jag var ditt hjärtas vän? Jag minns det som en tystnad sång, då strängen darrar än. Jag minns en törnros av dig skänkt, en blick så blyg och öm; jag minns en avskedstår, som blänkt. Var allt, var allt en dröm? En dröm lik sippans liv så kort uti en vårgrön ängd, vars fägring hastigt vissnar bort för nya blommors mängd. Men mången natt jag hör en röst vid bittra tårars ström: göm djupt dess minne i ditt bröst, det var din bästa dröm!

Erinnerung, das Heckenröslein, das du mir geschenkt, Erinnerung, dein Blick, so scheu und liebevoll, Erinnerung, die Abschiedsträne, die aus deinem Auge quoll, war alles, alles nur ein Traum? Ein Traum, so kurz wie eine Küchenschell’ besteht im Lenz, auf einer grünen Au, wo ihre Schönheit bald vergeht vor neuer Blüten bunter Schau. Doch eine Stimme sagt in mancher Nacht zu mir durch meiner bittern Tränen Strom: Bewahre die Erinn’rung tief im Herzen Dir, dies war dein bester Traum!

Åter kom hon från sin älsklings möte, kom med röda läppar. Modern sade: "Varav rodna dina läppar, flicka?" Flickan sade: "Jag har ätit hallon och med saften målat mina läppar." Åter kom hon från sin älsklings möte, kom med bleka kinder. Modern sade: "Varav blekna dina kinder, flicka?" Flickan sade: "Red en grav, o moder! Göm mig där och ställ ett kors däröver, och på korset rista, som jag säger: En gång kom hon hem med röda händer, ty de rodnat mellan älskarns händer. En gång kom hon hem med röda läppar, ty de rodnat under älskarns läppar. Senast kom hon hem med bleka kinder, ty de bleknat genom älskarns otro."

Ihr Saft hat meine Lippen rot gemacht.“ Vom Liebsten kehrte sie erneut zurück, kommt mit fahlen Wangen. Mutter sagte: „Was hat dich so bleich gemacht, mein Mädchen?“ Mädchen sagte: „Richt mein Grab mir, Mutter! Birg mich dort und stell ein Kreuz darüber. Und auf dieses schreib, was ich dir sage: „Einst kam sie nach Haus mit roten Händen, sie wurden in des Liebsten Händen rot. Einst kam sie nach Haus mit roten Lippen, sie wurden durch des Liebsten Lippen rot. Dann kam sie nach Haus mit fahlen Wangen, erbleicht, weil er ihr war nicht treu.
