Άκουσα ένα ρυάκι να κυλάει κελαρυστό
Ακριβώς έξω από την βραχοπηγή, 
Κάτω εκεί στην κοιλάδα να κελαρύζει,
Τόσο φρέσκο και θαυμαστά λαμπρό.

Δεν ξέρω, πώς το ένιωσα αυτό, 
Ούτε ξέρω ποιος μου έδωσε την συμβουλή,
Έπρεπε να πάω κάτω
Με το οδοιπορικό μπαστούνι μου.

Κάτω κι όλο και πιο μακριά,
και πάντα το ρυάκι ακολουθώντας.
Κι όλο πιο φρέσκο κυλούσε
κι όλο πιο φωτεινό το ρυάκι.

Είναι λοιπόν αυτός ο δρόμος μου; 
Ω, ρυάκι, μίλα! προς τα πού; 
Έχεις με το κελάρυσμά σου
Μεθύσει τελείως τις αισθήσεις μου.

Αλλά γιατί μιλώ για κελάρυσμα; 
Αυτό δεν μπορεί να είναι όντως κελάρυσμα. 
Ίσως οι νύμφες του νερού
Τραγουδούν κυκλικά τραγούδια εκεί κάτω στα βαθιά.

Άστες να τραγουδούν, φίλε μου, άστες να μουρμουρίζουν,
Και περιπλανήσου χαρούμενα μετά!
Γυρνάνε μυλοτροχοί
Σε κάθε καθαρό ρυάκι.
