In zachte stemmen van vogels mompelt
De avondwind met zacht misbaar.
Wat fluist'ren de winden, de vogeltjes?
Zij fluist'ren natuur in sluimerrust!
 
O wensen, die maar steeds blijft leven
Van binnen, zonder rust of duur!
Jij, hunk'ring, die de borst doet beven,
Wanneer breekt aan jouw sluimeruur?
Bij 't fluist'ren der winden, der vogeltjes,
Jij, smachtend verlangen, vind jij ooit rust?
 
Wat komt gevlogen op dromende vleugels?
Wat waait mij aan, zo bang, zo zoet?
Het komt gevlogen van verre heuvels,
Het komt op zind'rende zonnegloed.
Wel fluist'ren de winden, de vogeltjes,
't Verlangen, 't verlangen, het vindt nooit rust.
 
Ach, als niet meer naar 't visionaire
Mijn geest op dromenvleugels ijlt,
