This poem, subtitled "Leipzig 24. April 1813 auf dem Schneckenberge", was first printed in Zwölf freie deutsche Gedichte von Theodor Körner Nebst einem Anhang. 1813, pages 31-33, edited by an anonymous friend (Leipzig, im November 1813), and differs in some ways from the version published 1814 in "Leyer und Schwerdt" by the poet's father.

I si pregunteu als companys negres: és la ferotge, temerària cacera de Lützow. Què és el que corre de pressa pel bosc ombrívol, errant de muntanya en muntanya? De nit es col·loquen en una emboscada llancen crits d’hurra i detonen els fusells, els esbirros francs cauen. I si pregunteu als caçadors negres: és la ferotge, temerària cacera de Lützow. Allà on les vinyes s’enrogeixen i mormola el Rin, l’home furiós es creia fora de perill, llavors s’apropen ràpid amb un esclat de tempesta i es llencen cap dins amb braços robusts i l’enemic salta a la riba. I si pregunteu als nedadors negres: és la ferotge, temerària cacera de Lützow! És la batalla sorollosa el que bramula allà a la vall, és el batec de les espases?
