Er staat een boom in ’t Odenwald, vol groene blaad’ren meest; Daar ben ik meer dan duizend maal met mijn vriendin geweest. Daar zit een kleine vogel in, die fluit als een sopraan; Ik en mijn schatje horen op, als wij daar samen gaan. De vogel zit volmaakt in rust daarboven op de top, Aan ’t fluiten gaat hij dadelijk, als wij zien naar hem op. De vogel zit daar op zijn nest, mooi in de groene boom, Ach, schatje, ben ‘k bij jou geweest of is het slechts een droom? En toen ik weerom bij haar kwam, verdord was toen de boom; Een and’re minnaar stond bij haar, jawel, het was een droom! De boom staat in het Odenwald, ik ben in Zwitserland, Daar ligt de sneeuw zo koud, zo koud; mijn hart brak faliekant.
