Nein, länger werd' ich diesen Kampf nicht kämpfen,
Den Riesenkampf der Pflicht.
Kannst du des Herzens Flammentrieb nicht dämpfen,

Geschworen hab ich's, ja ich hab's geschworen,
Mich selbst zu bändigen.
Hier ist dein Kranz, er sey auf ewig mir verloren,
Nimm ihn zurück und laß mich sündigen.

Zerrissen sey, was wir bedungen haben,
Sie liebt mich - deine Krone sey verscherzt.
Glückselig, wer in Wonnetrunkenheit begraben, 
So leicht wie ich den tiefen Fall verschmerzt.

Sie sieht den Wurm an meiner Jugend Blume nagen
Und meinen Lenz entflohn,
Bewundert still mein heldenmüthiges Entsagen
Und großmuthsvoll beschließt sie meinen Lohn.

Mistraue, schöne Seele, dieser [Engelgüte]2,
Dein Mitleid waffnet zum Verbrechen mich.
Giebt's in des Lebens unermeßlichem Gebiete
Giebt's einen andern schönern Lohn als dich?

Als das Verbrechen, das ich ewig fliehen wollte?
Tyrannisches Geschick!
Der einz'ge Lohn, der meine Tugend krönen sollte,
Ist meiner Tugend letzter Augenblick!

No, no lluitaré més en aquest combat,
l’enorme combat del deure.
Si no pots esmorteir el flamejant impuls de meu cor,
llavors, oh virtut, no em demanis aquest sacrifici.

He jurat, sí, he jurat de refrenar-me.
Aquí tens la teva corona. 
L’he perdut per sempre,
pren-la i deixa’m pecar.

Que sigui esquinçat el que havíem estipulat,
ella m’estima – que la teva corona es perdi fútilment.
Benaventurat el que és enterrat ebri de goig
i tan fàcilment com jo es conhorta de la profunda desfeta.

Ella veu el cuc que rosega la flor de la meva joventut
i com s’enfuig la meva primavera;
tanmateix admira la meva heroica renunciació
i generosament decideix la meva recompensa.

No et refiïs, ànima bella, d’aquesta bondat angèlica!
La teva compassió em dóna armes per al delicte,
en el domini incommensurable de la vida,
hi ha alguna altra recompensa més preuada que tu mateixa?

Que el pecat del qual he volgut fugir per sempre?
Oh destí cruel!
