So wunderfrohen Muth!
Das kommt von süßer Minne,
Die heimlich brennen thut.
Dadraußen lacht der Mai,
Nun geht's ans Wandern frei;
Und böt' man hundert Gulden mir,
Ich wär' nicht mit dabei.
Mein Schatz hat lichte Haare
Und Wänglein weiß und roth;
Von ihr will ich nicht fahren,
Es scheid' uns denn der Tod.
In aller weiten Welt
Mir nichts so wohl gefällt;
Seit ich mein'n Schatz zuerst erschaut,
Ist's Wandern mir vergällt.
Drei Wochen nach Michaele
Geht's an ein lustig Frei'n.
So froh mag keine Seele
Auf dieser Erde sein.
Ein eigen Haus und Herd
Ist Kaiserkronen werth,
Und kommt mir je das Wandern an,
Ich mach' schon zeitig Kehrt.

Such a wondrously joyful spirit!
That comes from sweet love,
Which burns secretly.
Outdoors May is laughing,
Now is the time for free wandering;
And if one offered me a hundred guilders,
I would not be among the wanderers.
My darling has bright hair,
And cheeks of white and red,
And I will never leave her
Unless death should part us.
In the great wide world
Nothing pleases me so well;
Since the first time I saw my darling,
Wandering has been spoiled for me.
Three weeks after Michaelmas
There shall be a merry wedding.
No soul upon this earth
Can be this happy.
My own house and hearth
Is worth the crowns of emperors,
And should I ever be struck by the urge to wander,
I shall certainly turn around in a timely manner.
