Viele Glocken hör' ich läuten,
Nun es Abend werden will --
Eine nur will nimmer klingen, 
Eine nur ist ewig still.

Tiefe Glocke meines Glückes: 
Einmal noch zur Abendzeit
Singe über meinem Hügel
Jenes Lied voll Seligkeit.

Dem ich meine junge Stirne 
Lauschend einst empor gewandt,
Da ich noch auf hellen Wegen 
Schritt an meines Liebsten Hand.

I hear many bells ringing
Now that evening falls --
Only one never wishes to sound,
Only one is eternally silent.

Deep bell of my happiness:
Once more at eventide
Sing over my burial mound
That song full of bliss.

To which I once lifted 
My young brow harkening,
When I still walked upon bright pathways
At the hand of my beloved.
