Jeg vandrer gennem Skoven
Vved Juletid!
Der falder Sne fra oven
Så vinterhvid:
Så vinterhvid den frosne Dug
Neddrysser lydløst, Fnug ved Fnug,
Og smelter på min Hånds den varme Flade,
Mens Foden træder melem visne Blade.

Jeg ser på Hånden de tårer stå --
Det er som en Hulken jeg hørte:
Nu blir vore Minder, store og små,
Gennem Skoven for Vinden førte.
Skal alt da hvirvles for Vintren hen,
Skal Sorg og Adskillelse råde?
Nej, Julesneen er Menneskets Ven,
Den gemmer hans dybeste Gåde.

På hånden et Fnug -- en Dråbe så hed --
Vi stirrer mod tindrende Blikke:
En Tåre, som gennem vor Tanke gled --
Ak! andet er det vel ikke!
Men krymper vi os under Verdens Nød
Mens Tiderne ældes og strænges:
Den frosne Tåre, den falder så blød
På alt, hvad som savner og længes.

Jeg vandrer gennem Skoven

Så forårsblid:
Så forårsmildt de bløde Fnug
I Faldet smælter som en Dug,
Det nådigst alle skjulte Spirer væder --

Neige de Noël

Je marche à travers la forêt
Au temps de Noël :
De là-haut tombe la neige
Blanche comme l'hiver,
La rosée gelée, elle aussi d'une blancheur d'hiver,
Se répand sans bruit, flocon après flocon,
Et fond sur la chaude surface de ma main,
Tandis que mon pied avance parmi les feuilles mortes.

Je vois des larmes sur ma main --
C'est comme si j'entendais un sanglot :
Maintenant nos souvenirs, petits et grands, clignotent
Dans la forêt, poussés par le vent.
Faut-il que tout ce qui tourbillonne en hiver,
Nous incite au chagrin et à la séparation ?
Non, la neige de Noël est l'amie des hommes,
Elle cache sa plus profonde énigme.

Un flocon sur la main -- une si brûlante goutte --
Nous la fixons avec un regard brillant :
Ce n'est hélas pas autre chose
Qu'une larme qui a glissé dans notre pensée !
Mais nous nous courbons devant la nécessité du monde
Alors que le temps avance et devient rigoureux :
La larme gelée qui tombe si mollement
Sur tout, est ce qui manque et que l'on désire.

Je marche à travers la forêt
Au temps de Noël !
De là-haut tombe la neige
Douce comme le printemps :
Les flocons moelleux, eux aussi d'une douceur printanière,
Fondent dans leur chute comme de la rosée,
Et mouillent généreusement tous les germes encore cachés,
Tandis que toutes les sources de souvenirs pleurent doucement.
