Es dunkelt schon; komm, geh nach Haus,
komm! Das Kastanien-Blattgewühl
streckt sich wie Krallen nach uns aus.
Es ist zu einsam hier, zu schwül
für uns.

Denn sieh: die Linien deiner Hand,
[sieh, sind]1 den meinen viel zu gleich.
Du schienst mir plötzlich so verwandt,
so vorbekannt,
vielleicht aus einem andern Reich.

Ich hatt' ne Schwester, die ist tot.
Sei nicht so stumm, als wärst du taub!
Die Abendwolke dampft so rot
durchs junge Laub,
als ob sie uns Blutschande droht.

Horch! Ja, so wild und unverwandt,
wie jetzt die Nachtigal da schlug,
zittert dein Herz in meiner Hand.
Wir wissen es; das ist genug
für uns.

Le soir tombe déjà ; viens, rentrons,
viens ! Les feuilles du marronnier en profusion
s'étendent vers nous comme des griffes.
Ici, c'est trop solitaire, trop étouffant
pour nous.

Mais vois : les lignes de ta main,
vois, sont tout à fait pareilles aux miennes.
Tu me sembles soudain si métamorphosée,
déjà si reconnue,
peut-être d'un autre royaume.

J'avais une sœur qui est morte.
Ne sois pas ainsi, muette, comme si tu étais sourde !
Le nuage du soir lève une vapeur si rouge
à travers le feuillage nouveau,
comme s'il nous menaçait d'une honte sanglante.

Écoute ! Oui, aussi sauvage et constant,
pareil au rossignol qui chante maintenant,
ton cœur tremble dans ma main.
Nous le savons ; c'est assez
pour nous.
