Gewunden um dein Haupt,
Nicht bunt von Sommerblumen,
Nicht immer grün belaubt;
 
Von hellen, weißen Perlen
Soll es geflochten sein,
Durch deine schwarzen Locken
Fließ' es wie Sternenschein.
 
Neige dein Haupt, du Liebe,
Lös' auf dein langes Haar!
Kennst du die Perlenkrone,
Durchsichtig, wasserklar?
 
Bebt Ahnung dir im Herzen?
O glaube, was sie spricht.
Laß auf dein Haupt mich weinen!
Tauft denn die Thräne nicht?

The garland of pearls

A little garland I would like to see
Wound about your brow,
Not colourful with summer flowers,
Not always leafy green;
 
Of white, shining pearls
It should be plaited,
Through your dark curls
It should flow like starlight.
 
Incline your head, you dear one,
Undo your long hair!
Do you know the crown of pearls,
Transparent, clear as water?
 
Does a premonition tremble in your heart?
Oh believe what it says.
Let me weep upon your head!
Are not tears a baptism?
