Wij zaten, 't hert vol wonne

Wij zaten, 't hert vol wonne,
    in d'avondschijn te droomen,
en volgden de roode zonne,
    die neerzonk achter de boomen.

Ons zielen neurden een avondlied,
    en dachten aan sterven noch scheiden!
Wij zagen het niet, wij voelden het niet:
    een spook zat tusschen ons beiden!

Daar zat het, onbewogen,
    en toen ik u kwam to omarmen,
toen brandden zoo wild zijne oogen,
  toen reikte 't u, grijnzend, de armen!

En toen gij mij zwoert:  ‘In eeuwigheid’,
  toen sprong het van [vreugde in het]1 ronde!...
