Daß ich Ihn nun heisser liebe,
Den, für uns, dahin Gegebnen;
Daß ich ganz sein Heil, nun kenne,
Dank' ich dir, Du Edler;
Nie wird dieses Aug' auf Erden
Sehnsuchtsvoll an Deinem hangen;
Nie wirst Du die Röthe sehen,
Die mein Antlitz färbet!
Aber, [wenn]1 des Mittlers Stimme
Mich auch aus dem Grabe rufet,

May fervent thanks pour forth in tears!
Pour forth to the man who was sent by God!
Hear, oh man, the youth's stammering!
His soul speaks it haltingly.
Far away in a foreign land you
Poured fire into my heart!
Lofty, heaven-filled worship
Makes its way to the throne of the interceder.
That I now love Him more fervently,
Him, who was sacrificed for us;
That I now know His salvation completely,
For this I thank you, you noble one;
Never upon earth shall my eyes
Gaze yearningly into your eyes;
Never shall you see the blush
That colours my visage!
But when the voice of the interceder
Calls me forth from the grave as well,
[Then, oh man sent by God,
You, too, shall hear my thanks!]1
