Les doux mots que morte et passée... 
On dirait presque des mots d'amour, 
De sommeil et de demi-jour…
La plupart des mots que l'on sait 
N’enferment pas tant le bonheur. 
On dit Marthe et l’on dit Marie, 
Et cela calme et rafraîchit.
Il y a bien des mots qui pleurent ; 
Ceux-là ne pleurent presque pas…
Marthe, c’est, au réveil, le pas
Des mères dans la chambre blanche ;
C'est comme une main qui se pose, 
Et l'armoire sent la lavande…
Il faut murmurer quelque chose, 
Pour se bien consoler, des mots, 
N'importe lesquels s'ils consolent, 
S'ils endorment et tiennent chaud. 
Ah ! loin des meilleures paroles, 
Les doux noms que Marthe et Marie, 
Les doux mots que morte et passée…
