Chioggia

Wetterbraune, dichtgedrängte Fassaden,
Marienbilder in verborgenen Nischen,
Wasserspiegel und träge Gondeln dazwischen
Und breite Barken mit braunen Fischern beladen.
Überall aber, auf jeder bröckelnden Mauer,
In allen Gassen, auf Treppen und in Kanälen
Liegt eingeschlummert eine verzweifelte Trauer
Und will von vergangenen Zeiten erzählen.
Leise geh ich und mit verborgenem Schrecken
Über die Fliesen - ängstlich, ich möchte sie wecken.
Wenn sie erwachte! Ich könnte nimmer entrinnen!
Eilend schreit' ich vorbei und suche den Hafen,
Suche das Meer und ein reisendes Schiff zu gewinnen.
Hinter mir zögern traurig die Gassen und schlafen.

Façades serrées, patinées par le temps
Images de la Vierge Marie dans des niches cachées,
Miroir des eaux et parsemé de gondoles indolentes
Et de grandes barques chargées de poissons bruns.
Mais partout, sur chaque mur s'effritant,
Dans toutes les ruelles, sur les marches et les canaux,
Il y a une tristesse assoupie, désespérée
Qui veut nous parler des temps passés.
Avec une inquiétude dissimulée je marche doucement
Sur les dalles, dans la crainte que je puisse les réveiller.
S'ils se réveillaient ! Je ne pourrais jamais m'échapper !
Je presse le pas et cherche le port,
Cherche la mer et un bateau en partance.
Derrière moi les ruelles tristes tergiversent et dorment.
